Astra — Enterprise Workflow Platform
Case study: End-to-end workflow automation platform for enterprise operations. Replaced manual multi-step processes with a guided execution engine and real-time results tracking.
Project Overview
The client ran structured multi-step operational processes across several sites — each step dependent on the previous one, each requiring sign-off before the next could start. The process lived in spreadsheets, shared drives, and tribal knowledge. When steps were missed or completed out of order, defects surfaced downstream and were hard to trace back to source.
We built Astra, a guided execution platform that walks operators through each process step in sequence, captures results and device data at each stage, and gives supervisors a live view of every active run. The system enforces compliance by design: operators can’t skip steps, and every action is timestamped and attributed.
Technical Implementation
The platform was built to be reliable under real operational conditions — offline-tolerant, recoverable on failure, and simple enough for non-technical operators to use without training overhead:
- Execution Engine: Python-backed step sequencer with per-step state persistence in PostgreSQL, so a network drop or restart resumes mid-run without data loss
- Operator Interface: React frontend with a guided, form-driven UI — each step presents exactly what the operator needs to see, nothing more
- Device Data Capture: Integrated with USB-connected test fixtures to pull measurement data directly into the execution record, eliminating manual transcription
- Real-Time Dashboard: Redis-backed supervisor view showing live run status, step durations, and pass/fail rates across all active stations
Operational Impact
Astra replaced a process that required constant oversight and manual coordination with one that is self-directing and self-documenting:
- Eliminated missed steps: Sequential enforcement means no step can be skipped or executed out of order — the workflow itself enforces the process
- Full traceability: Every run produces a complete audit record tied to operator, device, timestamp, and measured values — root cause analysis that previously took hours now takes minutes
- Consistent results across sites: All sites run identical workflows from the same platform, removing site-to-site variation from manual interpretation of paper instructions
- Supervisor visibility: Live dashboards replaced status check-ins and end-of-shift reports, giving leads real-time awareness without interrupting operators on the floor
